Meet Your Instructor
Carol began her professional interpreting career in 1968. Prior to that time she interpreted for her parents and their friends. She was one of the first interpreters at NTID when it opened. It was an exciting start to a fascinating career. She holds a CSC, SC:L, CI and CT from RID. After moving to Washington, DC she completed a Master’s Degree at Catholic University and began freelance interpreting in a wide variety of settings, specializing in legal and medical interpreting. In 1984 accepted a faculty position at Gallaudet University. She completed her PhD in Adult Cognition at the University of Maryland.
She was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Faculty award at Gallaudet University where she was Professor and Director of the MA in Interpretation. While at Gallaudet, she was Project Director for a Federal Grant focusing on interpreter education in an outreach format for the Mid-Atlantic Region. She is a past president of the Conference of Interpreter Trainers and is a recipient of the Mary Stotler Award. Carol was one of the founding Commissioners on the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education. She serves on the Board of Editors of RID’s Journal of Interpretation and the International Journal of Interpreter Education, published by CIT.
After her retirement from Gallaudet, Carol began writing The Effective Interpreting Series, the realization of a life-long dream. She is the author of the eight-volume series,The Effective Interpreting Series and the video series, Interpreting in Medical, Legal, and Insurance Settings, all published by DawnSignPress. Consecutive Interpreting from ASL will be released in 2014, followed by the remaining volume in the EIS.
Her most recent release is Fingerspelled Word Recognition through Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) a groundbreaking approach to successfully comprehending fingerspelled words in context. RSVP includes theory behind fingerspelling, provides abundant research-based practice,and includes a textbook, CD Rom and DVD. RSVP can be used in the classroom or for self-study and is suitable for ASL or interpreting students, as well as interpreters.
